Document types: set up and customise

Use the 16 predefined document types, create your own, and decide which metadata each type gets.

The document type tells fynk what kind of contract a document is, for example an NDA or a lease. It decides which metadata the AI looks for, and you can filter and report by it. fynk detects the type automatically when you import a document.

Predefined document types

In Account Settings → Document types, the tabs All, Account (your own types) and System (the predefined types) list the types with their name and description. Use the ⋯ menu to manage a type. Every account starts with 16 document types:

Each predefined type comes with matching metadata. A lease, for example, gets fields such as rent and deposit; an employment contract gets salary and working hours.

Create your own document type

  1. Go to Account Settings → Document types.

  2. Click Create document type.

  3. Enter a Name and a short Description. The AI uses the description to recognise documents of this type, so describe what makes them distinct.

  4. Enter a Prompt for the AI extraction, or click Fill with AI to have fynk write one.

  5. Under Relevant metadata, choose the metadata the AI should extract for this type. Metadata that apply to all document types are already listed: Amendment And Modification Clause, Effective Date, Entire Agreement Clause, Governing Law Clause, Jurisdiction and Severability Clause.

  6. Click Create.

Examples: "Framework agreement", "Supplier quality agreement", "Sponsorship contract".

Adjust or deactivate types

  • To change which metadata a type gets, open the type and add or remove fields.

  • Turn off types you never use, so the AI doesn't pick them by mistake. Deactivating is safer than deleting: you can turn a type back on any time.

Change the type of a document

Open General in the document sidebar and change Document type in the Document settings panel. For many documents, run the AI analysis again for the document type. See Fill new metadata on existing documents.

Good to know

  • Keep types broad and clearly distinct. Too many similar types make the AI's choice less reliable. Use metadata or tags for finer distinctions.

  • Predefined types are available in English and German. Custom types have the name you give them, in one language.

  • The document type is set once per document. A document can't have two types.

  • Document types replaced the older "contract types" in February 2026.
